Entitled to the War Medal for WWI service.
Born 30 Aug 1866. Entered Royal Navy 15 Jan 1880. He served as a Midshipman on board HMS Monarch in the Egyptian campaign at the bombardment of Alexandria, 11 July 1882. Promoted to Sub Lieut 24 Aug '86 he served on several ships before attending the RN college & passing for Lieut. on 30 Jun '90. Cayley was fluent in French & qualified as an Interpreter. From 19 May '93 he served on board HMS Trafalgar in the Med Fleet. On 25 May he was seconded for duty on board HMS Victoria, Flagship of the Med Fleet, Vice Adm. George Tryon. He was on board Victoria when she was rammed & sunk by HMS Camperdown on the afternoon of 22 June 1893. Cayley was among the 285 saved. He subsequently served in Command of TB 44 from 13 Mar '94 then returned to Trafalgar until 4 May '96. He then was appointed 1st Lieut, 19 Jun '96, of HMS Bellona in the Channel Sqdn. Subsequently 1st Lieut. on Phaeton, & Benbow.
Cayley was promoted to Commander on 30 Jun '01, & appointed Commander of Boscawen, Sutlej, & Berwick. Promoted Captain 31 Dec '05 whilst in command of St Vincent. His appointments as Captain were on Logan's Clothing Committee ('06], Signal Course ('06], War Course ('06-07), Blake as Capt. (D) ('07),Leander ('07-09), War College Staff Course ('09), Ass't Director of Mobilization (09), Cayley was then appointed Flag Captain to Vice Adm. Winsloe in HMS Minotaur on the China station. 1 Jan '10 to 28 Feb On On May May'13 appointed Captain of HMS Ganges for Boys Training est. Promoted Commodore 2' class 3 Sep '14. Appointed Commodore 1st cl in Command of Harwich base, Oct '14.
Promoted to Rear Admiral in Command of Harwich, 2 July '17. On 18 Mar '18 Cayley was offered Command of the Northwestern Air District RAF with a temporary commission of Major General, RAF. He served in this appointment until 4 April '19, & was placed on the retired List at his own request on 18 July '19. Cayley had served 39 yrs 7 months in the RN. He was 56 yrs of age.
Promoted to Vice Admiral on Ret'd list on 3 May '22, & Admiral on 8 Nov '26. George Cayley died 21 Dec 1944, 78 yrs, 4 months of age.
