U-657 commanded by Korvetten Kapitan Heinrich Gollnitz.

For "outstanding" enterprise and skill in an attack on an enemy submarine on 6 April 1944.
U-302 sunk northwest of the Azores, all hands lost. Confirmed by german naval records after the war.

For distinguished service when on a voyage from Freetown to Gibraltar, H.M.S. Swale received a signal to go north with all speed as three ships were under attack by long range enemy aircraft. These were the Casablanca, the Duchess of Windsor and the Port Fairy. The first two ships were carrying troops and nurses to the far east.
H.M.S. Swale picked up survivors from the Casablanca and the Duchess of Windsor which had been sunk.
H.M.S. Swale went alongside the Port Fairy and managed to get damage and fires under control.
