William Davis Grant was born in Scotland in March 1817, and was appointed Ensign in the Madras Establishment, in January 1834. He was posted to the 50th Madras Native Infantry in May 1835, and advanced to Lieutenant in February 1837. Grant served with the Regiment during the Goomsoor campaign 1836-37. He advanced to Captain in August 1847, and served with the Regiment as part of the Saugor Field Division during the Indian Mutiny. He retired as Lieutenant-Colonel in August 1861, and resided near Clevedon in later life. Lieutenant-Colonel Grant died in December 1890.
