Charles Grant was born in Cape Town in 1837, the son of John Grant of the Bengal Medical Establishment. He was educated in Kensington and admitted to the 72nd Native Infantry in June 1855 before being posted to the 45th Native Infantry on 4 August 1855. He was later attached to the 2nd Bengal European Fusiliers and served with them at the siege of Delhi during the Indian Mutiny. In April 1858 he transferred to the 1st Punjab Infantry, however, he was cashiered and dismissed the service by Court Martial on 27 December 1861. The circumstances of his dismissal have yet to be researched.
His brother, Donald Grant, was joint magistrate at Humeerpore and was murdered there by mutineers on 18 June 1857 (London Gazette 6 May 1858).
