Officers Military General Service Medal to Lieut. Weir, 36th Foot

Military General Service 1793-1814, 2 clasps, Nivelle, Orthes officially named to: S. Weir, Lieut. 36th. Foot.

Mounted on a long section of original riband with top silver three-pronged brooch buckle, small areas of abrasion to edge at 3 and 9 o’clock, possibly from having been held in a circular mount, otherwise about extremely fine and a unique combination of clasps to the 36th Foot.

James Weir served as a Volunteer in the 42nd Regiment of Foot from December 1812 to May 1813, before being commissioned Ensign in the 36th Regiment of Foot on 13 May 1813, and was present at the Battles of Nivelle and Orthes. He was transferred to the Half-Pay list the following year, following the disbandment of the 2nd Battalion upon the reduction of the Army, but was restored to the establishment as a Lieutenant in the 50th Regiment of Foot on 30 December 1819, and was promoted Captain on 27 November 1838. He exchanged into the 54th Regiment of Foot on 7 April 1843, and transferred to the Retired List the following year.

Note: The first initial on the M.G.S. is clearly a transcription error, the ‘J’ for James having been interpreted as an ‘S’.
