Albert Luxford was born at Maidstone, Kent on 4 May 1887, the son of Albert and Elizabeth Luxford. A merchant seaman prior to the Great War, Luxford enlisted in the Royal Naval Reserve Trawler Section on 19 June 1917 and was posted to H.M.S. Cormorant at Gibraltar on 20 June 1917. He was mentioned in despatches for services in action against enemy submarines in 1919. Invalided out from the Royal Naval Reserve with a disability gratuity on 28 February 1919, Luxford returned to the merchant navy; sold together with copied service papers and research.
