Joseph McDowell was born at Carluke, Lanarkshire and enlisted at Lanark, son of Mr. and Mrs Robert McDowell, of Nethanbank, Crossford. He first served overseas in the Balkan theatre on 7 September 1915 and transferred to the 1st Garrison Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders with the service number S/14610. McDowell was reported Missing on 20 June 1917 and was likely taken prisoner, dying on 3 October 1918 at Plovdiv. He is buried in the Plovdiv Central Cemetery, Bulgaria.
